This session will feature several short presentations in a row. After all the presentations are completed, participants will have the opportunity to ask questions of the presenters.

Prior Learning: Diversity and Practice
Nicholas Hayes, Roni Buckley, Barbara Lewis, Christopher Martinuzzi, Krissy Wilson
The presentation will comprise three main movements. The first will be an overview of how Prior Learning and Prior Learning Assessment are used in higher education. The second will be a discussion of the promise and limitations of Prior Learning to promote traditionally excluded voices in higher education. The third will be a discussion of strategies for using principles of Prior Learning across disciplines and in the classroom including spotlights on:
  • Using workplace experience translating to college credit
  • Using reflection to access and value prior learning at the course level
  • Connecting prior learning to humanities
  • Connecting prior knowledge, identity, and diversity/inclusion

Decolonize Now: Building Inclusive Syllabi for the College Classroom
Rita Mookerjee
I offer a call to action for all faculty committed to equity and inclusion. The current practices we commonly teach and use to make the classroom welcoming to all are not sufficient. There are small but impactful changes you can make to the syllabus to set a precedent for your inclusive classroom. These deal with introductions, visual/audio accessibility, triggers, dissent, and gatekeeping. None of the changes I propose require extensive research or replanning. They are little tweaks you can use in-person or online.
